Mare Island was the largest former US Naval Shipyards on the West Coast, located on the Napa River just twenty-two miles north of San Francisco. The shipyard closed in 1996 and has gradually transformed itself into the center for large construction projects. i.e. the bow trusses for the SF International Airport were fabricated on Mare Island as well as hundreds of 10’ diameter x 200 foot long steel piles for the New Eastern Span of the Bay Bridge project.
